Water Quality Issues – Discoloured Water
Discoloured water is a very common problem in Perth. How often do you go to pour yourself a glass of water in the morning only to find it has an unappetising yellow or brown colour with floating particles. This is normally caused by one of two things:
- A change in the speed of water flow in your pipes has disrupted the sediment that sits in your water pipes
- Air and chalk in your water supply making the water appear white
In either case the water is classified as ‘safe to drink’ however disgusting it may look, but they can have a terrible effect on the taste.
Short Term Solution:
Run the garden tap closest to your water supply until it is clear (5 minutes) – The suspended particles should be extracted in this first 5 minutes. This should fix the problem in the short term.
WARNING – your garden tap releases water at around 6 litres a minute, this water will be charged at your normal water rates.
Water Filtration Solution:
The easiest and most cost effective solution to discoloured drinking water is to install a sediment water filter to your tap. This will filter the water as you use it and, as the name suggests, remove the sediment leaving your water clean and clear. Most domestic water filters will have at least one sediment filter cartridge along with any other function you require. For more information you can check out out under sink water filters page.
This problem comes from your water supply so effects all the water outlets in your house, although is most noticeable in your drinking water. The sediment itself should have little effect on any other area but we have had customers complain that the water discolouration has affected their washing.
You may well want to filter the water as it enters your house, in this case you would need a Whole of House water filter. As with point of use filters, a whole of house system will have a sediment filter as standard. For some more information please go to our whole house water filters page.
