Water Quality Issues – Chlorine Taste & Odour
Anyone who has ever been to a public pool will recognise the taste of overly chemical taste of heavily treated water. This comes from the chlorine that is used to by water treatment plants and is often dismissed as a necessary evil of healthy drinking water but it doesn’t have to be.
This is caused by the reaction of natural organic compounds with chlorine that is added to all water supply sources to prevent contamination. In Australia, even treatment plants that use non-chlorine disinfection technologies are required to add chlorine to the water before it flows into the distribution system. This residual chlorine acts like a ‘body guard’ for water transit. However once it leaves your pipes, all you are left with is that terrible taste.
SHORT TERM SOLUTION
To remove the taste you can add freshly squeezed lemon juice to each glass of water and allow water to stand in the sunlight in a covered container for 2 hours.
WATER FILTRATION SOLUTION
As always there is a longer term solution that will prevent this problem at the source, remove the chlorine. For this you will need a carbon based water filter. The carbon inside the cartridge absorbs the chlorine without leaving any negative effects on your water supply. These can be attached either at the tap or to the mains as they enter your house.
