Do I need a Fridge Filter?

 In Water Filter>Fridge Filters

Fridges with water dispensers are becoming more and more commonplace and the inbuilt chilling and ice functions mean that more and more people are using their fridge for drinking water, but does it need a fridge filter? What do fridge filters remove? What effect does my fridge filter have on my water? What will happen if I do not replace my fridge filter? Can I remove my fridge filter?

What do Fridge Filters remove?

Most fridge filters are simple, sediment filters. This means the water passes through small pores that act like a sieve, removing particles that are suspended in your water supply. These particles will be rust or dirt that was either too small for the large industrial sediment filters in water treatment plants or build up in the pipes. Fridge filters however will not remove chemicals or heavy metals simply particles too large to fit through the filters.

What effect does my fridge filter have on my water?

If unfiltered the sediment will give your water, and ice, that murky appearance. In rural areas, where the water has been poorly treated or travels further in your pipes, this can be quite a dramatic effect. In extreme cases your ice can be grainy and poorly frozen.

What will happen if I do not replace my fridge filter?

If unchanged the filter becomes clogged with all the sediment that it removes. If unchanged this can cause a blockage and affect the water being passed through it. The filtering capabilities of the cartridge will also be rendered useless and the water will be the same as from your tap. The biggest danger of not changing your water filter however is that I can become a breeding ground for bacteria, and actually have an adverse-effect on your waters purity.

Can I remove my fridge filter?

Some models do allow for the filter to be removed completely without affecting the flow of water, however we recommend you check with the supplier or documentation before taking our your filter cartridge.
