Why do I need a shower filter?
Shower filters are a great, cost effective way to remove chlorine from your shower water. Most, like our Rainshow’r Shower Filter, fit onto your existing shower setting with with minimal fuss. But apart from the cost, what are the benefits of filtering your shower water?
Most shower heads are sold on their ability to remove chlorine and while most people are aware of the negative effects of chlorine in your drinking water, the benefits of filtered shower water are much less well known. Until now:
Skin and Hair
Removing the chlorine from your shower water greatly improves the health of your skin and hair. Chlorine is a drying agent that removes the natural moisturising oils from your body. When you go to a public pool you’ll notice your skin feels dry and can often even become ‘flaky’ and that your hair is knotted and unmanageable. This is due largely to the chlorine required to keep the pool clean. Well this same process is used, albeit in smaller doses in your shower. Filtering your shower water will give you softer, younger looking hair and skin, with less wrinkles without using as many expensive lotions and moisturisers. These effects are much stronger in children, whose skin is more delicate and constant exposure to the drying effects of chlorine in the shower can cause rashes and irritation.
Respiratory System
Chlorine is also linked with respiratory illnesses. When you are in the shower the chlorine becomes almost mobilised in the air around you, causing you to inhale surprisingly large amounts. By filtering your shower you reduce the levels of chlorine and therefore your chances of developing respiratory problems like asthma and bronchitis.
Energy Levels
Chlorine is a leading cause of fatigue, when it is in your system it reduces your energy levels, this is a fact. Between inhaling, drinking and absorbing chlorine whilst in the shower, you are consuming chlorine and that chlorine can make you more tired and feel less motivated.
Bladder and Breast Cancer
This theory is fairly new, as in there have only been a handful of studies so far, however there is some evidence that chlorine exposure in water, can lead to bladder and breast cancer. When chlorine is used to disinfect water, as in your supply, it can break down into water chemicals called trihalomethanes (THMs) and it is these that have been linked with cancer. This theory is however in the early stages and it would be irresponsible of us to tell you that not filtering your shower water will cause cancer.
