What Is A Micron?
have searched the internet for water filter information, you will have noticed every manufacturer and retailer is boasting about the Micron value of their water filtration systems.
”Our new and improved 0.005 micron water filter”
But what does this number mean?
Micron is short for micrometre which is one millionth of a metre. To put that into perspective, an average human hair is 70-100 microns wide. The micron rating of a water filter is the size of the pores in the filter cartridge which equates to the size of the largest particle that will slip through the filter cartridge. In practical terms the smaller the number, the more particles will be filtered out of your water by the cartridge.
Is Smaller Always Better?
This is a very difficult question to answer, generally a smaller (better) micron rating means purer or better filtered water. However it is not always that cut and dry. The smaller the holes in the filter the larger the membrane has to be so as not to restrict the flow of water, so there is a balance to be struck between micron rating and the size of the filter. Most visible particles like dirt and rust will be removed at about 20 microns and at 5 you can almost guarantee they have been completely removed.
If you There is also an issue with the filter getting clogged. Everything that is your water filter removes is retained in the cartridge and the more that is removed the more regularly it will need replacing. If this is the case you may want to try a dual filter system with 2 different micron settings. This will prevent the smaller particles from affecting the higher micron rating filter and vice versa.
