Reverse Osmosis or RO – How Does it Work?

Reverse osmosis has been used for years to desalinate water, turning seawater into drinking water and is generally seen as the most effective way to purify water and since it’s invention 40 years ago has been adopted by medical experts and many commercial and industrial, simply because it is so effective at purifying water.

The Reverse Osmosis unit uses your domestic water pressure to force the water through what is called a semi permeable membrane. This think membrane only allows the pure water to pass through removing all the impurities even dissolved solids. These impurities are then flushed away, leaving you clean pure water from your tap.

What Does a Reverse Osmosis System Remove?

RO System

A Reverse Osmosis System is not selective the impurities it removes from your water. The physical process removes all particles and impurities over 0.0001 microns. This means it will remove everything that pollutes your water.

The table shows a detailed breakdown of what you can expect to remove with your Reverse Osmosis System.

How Effective is Reverse Osmosis?

Reverse osmosis is the most effective method of water filtration. The semi-permeable membrane is the technology used to make bottled water or desalinating sea water to make it drinking water. The 0.0001 micron filter qualities of the membrane is far smaller than the 0.5-10 micron filters found in most water filtration systems, making Reverse Osmosis far more effective at removing substances that have been dissolved in your water. The result Is that RO water is the cleanest and safest possible for your home.

Why was Reverse Osmosis developed?

Reverse osmosis was developed for desalination, removing salt from sea water to get fresh water. However over the last 40 years this process has been refined and improved to remove smaller and smaller particles from your water.

Is Reverse Osmosis Water less healthy?

Reverse Osmosis Water Filters remove all impurities from your water, some of which may have a nutritional value such as calcium and magnesium. However these losses are minuscule are far outweighed by the benefits of removing harmful, unhealthy pollutants from your water. The end result is drinking water that is far better for you.

Do I Need Another Water Filter?

RO systems come in stages, including Sediment and Carbon Filtration, these not only improve the effectiveness of the system but also protect the membrane and prolong the service life of your system, these extra filters make your water purer and healthier.
