The Best Water Filter For You
The Best Water Filter For You
Can you hardly stand the taste of your tap water? Did you move into an area that is known for having hard water that is full of contaminants? Is it costing you a fortune to buy bottled water? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you are in need of a water filter.
When you are ready to head out and purchase one, here are the 3 filter types to consider. Doing your research now, will save you both time and money down the road. So let’s take a quick look at the best water filters you can buy for your home.
Reverse Osmosis
This filter is probably one of the most widely used drinking water filtration methods because of how well it works. Reverse osmosis is used to simply convert contaminated water into filtered water. One of the great things about reverse osmosis is that it can even make ocean water drinkable, as it pulls all of the salt out. While not all of us have to worry about radioactive particulates, for those that do reverse osmosis will get the job done.
This system uses a semi-permeable membrane that only allows certain things to pass through it with the water; all of this trapping is done under high pressure. What’s interesting to note about this process, is that while it prevents various contaminants from passing through the filter, it also stops the minerals from passing through. However, to help improve the ‘health’ of the water, the minerals are added back in after the contaminants have been filtered out.
Carbon filters
Carbon filters, also referred to as activated carbon water filters, can be used on their own or as the last step in a three-part filtration system. Out of all of the water filters, this one is probably the easiest to understand in terms of usage. These filters work because the negatively charged carbon attracts contaminants that have a positive charge, then those contaminants stick to the carbon.
These filters work best removing any chemicals that cause your water to smell funny, such as chlorine and hydrogen sulfide, but are also great for removing organic chemicals. With carbon filters, the dirtier the carbon gets, the less contaminants will be attracted to it. For this reason, they require regular changing.
Sediment filtration
Sediment filtration can also be used independently, but is often the first filter used in a three-part filtration system that also uses activated carbon filters. These sediment filters are used for water that is gritty. They are made from pleated polyester or cellulose, and can also be made from spun polypropylene. The pleated cellulose is the most effective, but the pleated polyester can be reused a limited number of times, while being resistant to chemicals and bacteria.
The best water filter for you can be found by examining your household needs. If your water smells funny, carbon filters are your best choice. A combination can be used to address multiple problems. However, a reverse osmosis water filter is probably the best choice for your household drinking water, as it takes even the smallest contaminants out of the water. Sediment filters are generally advised for all other types or water filter as the sediment removal improves the life and effectiveness of your water filter. Whichever is right for you, water filters are a great long-term solution to clean, drinkable water.
